Gustave Doré (1832-1883) was a French artist from the 19th-century. I have been working on digitizing some of his illustrations from our Rare & Special Books Collection at the University at Buffalo Libraries. We have about 55 pre-1923 books that feature Gustave Doré’s illustrations.

So far I have done two books, Edgar Allan Poe’s The Raven (1884) and Tom Hood’s Fairy Realm (1865). While they are currently only a digital collection, I plan on having them available for purchase in our library store soon. I also plan on adding Coleridge’s Rime of the Ancient Mariner (1876), and Milton’s Paradise Lost (1885), among others.

Spent the weekend working on some built-in attic storage. This the first time I’ve fabricated something like this. It’s certainly not perfect but I think it looks pretty nice.

I reused the drawers and small door from a previous built-in I had in a hallway (the wall was taken out to open up the kitchen).

Building this was a bit tricky since the rafters are right behind them. I couldn’t put the drawers up higher like I wanted so I just put a small 8″ deep shelf on the top. This is actually better than I originally planned. I gained some extra storage with the shelf.

Next weekend I will be starting on another set of large drawers from the same hallway.

I still have to put another coat of stain and then 3 coats of poly. I should have a couple more photos up soon.

Lately in the Libraries we have been scanning some of our pre-1923 materials for digital collections. Copyright is tricky and scanning things before 1923 will usually be safe. I am just going by what the copyright librarian here in the Libraries has told me. He always says that copyright is always about how much risk you want to take.

The problem we have with scanning books is that they are bound. Getting them to lay flat on a scanning bed is almost impossible. We do have a BookEye, but the quality is not as good as a flatbed. We are looking to do hi-res scans to offer in our Library Store, have an archival copy to put into our Repository and put up a digital version in our catalog.

Yesterday I went to the Libraries Annex to take a look at some old issues of Puck Magazine from the 1800′s. When I got there I was informed we were given a new scanning station to try out for a couple weeks. See the photo below.

This is a walk up flatbed scanner with a touch screen. The really cool thing about it is the scanning bed goes right to the edge of the scanner. So the book can lay completely flat. I did a few test scans and they came out great. See the scan below.

The image was scanned at 600 dpi and exported as a jpeg to a jump drive. So scanning at 600 dpi gives us the option of offering a 24″ x 36″ poster on our Library Store.

Now I don’t know if we will be purchasing this scanner, but I hope we do cause it makes scanning books a lot easier.

I plan to have this site built with WordPress, HTML5, CSS3 and be responsive. This will be my first responsive site and will be good practice for when I have to redesign library.buffalo.edu this summer. That site will also need to be responsive.

I hope to have the site up and running in the next few months.
